BPD Girlie meets Awkward Redditor

The performances are quite good, but truly every character on screen is unlikable, except for (maybe) our protagonist.

The switching between comedy and tragedy doesn’t work, because while the comedy is effective, the dramatic scenes are excessive. Every scene seems to try to surpass the previous one in emotional weight, making the overall result feel repetitive and, at times, bordering on exhausting. Having such a stark contrast between the couple crosses the "hamfisted" boundary and borders on cartoonish at times.

The peak example is Kate Winslet’s character. Something that may not have been 100% intentional on the creators’ part, and it becomes apparent from the film’s tone toward the end. While the director seems to believe we should fall in love with the massive red flags of her character, it may come off as really grating and more on the "debilitatingly-mentally-ill" side, than the "endearing" one.

Jim Carrey's character unfortunately follows suit, written even more caricature-like. The awkward "loooser" that meets a femme fatale! What quirky stories might ensue! Well the stories that might require the director screaming "Make it more dramatic" to his poor writers, due to him reading too much Tumblr. Only wait! Tumblr's "golden age" only came in 2012-2014, so you can chalk up at least some of the dramatic-ness of it to this movie too, I guess. Like I didn't have enough reasons to dislike it. Maybe its just me though.
