Adrenaline-fueled breakneck pace Safdie roller coaster.
I loved Uncut Gems too, so half-expected I am going to really like this.
What I didn't expect though, was how much I related to this admittedly kinda bad guy... ok probably kinda horrible guy. Something about the amount of times this opportunist is in the process of squeezing himself in the narrow opening of a forcefully closing door is both fascinating and worryingly familiar - at least to me.
The characters presented are one by one delightful to watch. Tyler the Creator makes an appearance as a friend of the lead and frankly pleasantly surprises, since his role is both more impactful and way better acted than expected for a rapper making a serious acting debut.
As always with Safdie, the black humor is poignant and razor sharp and the pace is nothing short of tachycardia-inducing. I loved it in general, maybe with the exception of the last 1/4 of the movie, which seemed to slow down on the refreshing, surprising elements of the first 3/4s, instead having its cliché moments here and there. I would say the only thing that threw me off was the development of Marty in this last 1/4th - or maybe in the last minutes of the movie to be more precise - which seemed rushed to me. Overall, it is an extremely entertaining movie though.
