This movie manages to drown such a genuinely great main premise with an ocean of cliches.
It's sad because there was so much potential here. Why should this movie follow the same old formula of cliches and coincidences being the main driving force for the plot to move forward?
There are so many aspects of this movie that seem rushed and glossed over that it really breaks the immersion and makes you question what where the writers where thinking. Furthermore, a big percentage of the film's cast is not performing well too - and not just the child actors. Also, a swamp? Really? Even the hardest of attempts this movie makes still cannot make a dirty swamp look like... a dirty ugly swamp.
Mild spoilers below this point.
Our main character for example is written to be so one-tone that it genuinely becomes grating after a while. In the end Kya never leaves the swamp? This just ended up being sad and not at all what the movie was aiming to show. Like this girl is the Swamp NEET? I think some character called her the "Swamp Bitch" at some point, which made me maniacally laugh in he middle of the theatre of course.
The weakness of the writing is highlighted when the twist is revealed. This twist immediately knocked down the movie from a 2 star to a 1.5 star for me, because after a considerable amount of the movie just dragging on needlessly, what is revealed is so antithetical to what has been established that it actually ends up being funny.
I even laughed at the movie at the movie in certain scenes due to the overwhelmingly cheesy and ridiculous dialogues and events that unfold.
As far as watching it though, it is unintentionally funny so I would actually recommend it if you are in the mood for it. Taylor Swift wrote a song for it? Might make it worse depending on where you stand.
